The Alpine Fortress

Dramatic chase to find hidden Nazi treasure and capture drug mafia boss

Über dieses Buch

For two years now, the German secret service have been investigating an Argentinian drug boss, known as ‘the Lizard’, responsible for the massive increase of drug-trafficking to Europe. Argentina refuses to extradite him.

Ivanna is sorting out the loft of her deceased grandparents, when she finds a map of where supposedly Nazi stolen treasure is hidden. Her grandfather had been a prisoner of war in World War II and forced to work in a salt mine in Austria.

The Lizard is one of the most serious art collectors in the world. His father, a high-ranking German Nazi officer, has told him of such treasure. He cannot resist the temptation to leave his safe haven in Argentina and travel to South Germany where his gangsters have followed Ivanna to Berchtesgaden.

25 detectives arrive in Berchtesgaden for a week’s team training. They are met by their coach, Matteo, who sends them up the mountain, by foot, to their hostel. When they arrive, there are only twenty-four detectives; a young woman has disappeared. The criminal police begin to investigate but find themselves struggling when yet more detectives disappear and not every detective is who he seems to be.

Matteo is a mountain guide for the German federal police. The German secret service need his intimate knowledge of the steep mountains to find and arrest the lizard.

There follows a dramatic cat and mouse game, the lizard always one step ahead.

Will Matteo and the Secret Service succeed in arresting the Lizard before he escapes back to Argentina?

"Alpine Fortress: History Meets High-Stakes Thriller"
A cinematic, addictive thriller! Kinread masterfully blends haunting WWII history (art secrets) with a relentless modern chase across the Bavarian Alps. The research is clean; the pace is furious. An unforgettable mix of action and a gorgeous, dangerous setting. I highly recommend this outstanding book.

"A fast-paced thriller blending history, danger, and emotion"
The Alpine Fortress by Rowena Kinread is one of those rare thrillers that combines historical intrigue with modern-day suspense so seamlessly that you hardly notice when one era slips into the next. The story begins quietly — a granddaughter sorting through her late grandfather’s belongings — and within a few pages, explodes into an international chase across the Bavarian Alps. The discovery of a forgotten map ties Ivanna’s family history to the shadows of Nazi-era looting, and from there the pace never lets up. Kinread’s writing is cinematic: crisp, immersive, and charged with just the right amount of emotion. The atmosphere of the Alps is vividly drawn — cold, majestic, dangerous — perfectly matching the tone of a story that deals with betrayal, survival, and the ghosts of the past. Ivanna herself is a strong, believable heroine: intelligent but human, brave yet shaken by what she uncovers. The supporting cast — law-enforcement agents, intelligence operatives, and the ever-present threat of the drug mafia — adds layers of complexity that keep the reader guessing who can truly be trusted. What makes this book stand out is its balance: history buffs will appreciate the meticulous references to post-war treasure legends, while thriller fans will love the tension and relentless pacing. By the final chapters, The Alpine Fortress becomes more than a hunt for lost gold — it’s a story about truth, legacy, and what we’re willing to risk for redemption. 📖 Verdict: A gripping, intelligent adventure that feels both timeless and cinematic. Highly recommended for fans of Dan Brown, Robert Harris, or historical thrillers with emotional depth.
